This pattern was crossposted to Ravelry.com to help draw attention to the casting controversy of The Last Airbender. If you’re interested in supporting fair casting in Hollywood, we hope you’ll take a moment to read some of our articles on our website!

This Appa hat was created for our tabling efforts at the WonderCon 2010 convention. The pattern (loosely) is included below:

Yarn: Jo-Ann Sensations Sumptuous (Extra Bulky) 1 skein each of Brown and White
Needles: US 10.5 6.5mm
Other Stitch markers, Stuffed animal stuffing, yarn needle

Main Color (MC): White
Contrast Color (CC): Brown

Take skein of white and skein of brown and divide each store-bought skein into two separate balls each. You should have two balls of white yarn and two balls of brow yarn.

Hat Body

CO 60 st. using MC
Row 1-3: k2p2 with MC
When you do the colorwork for this hat, it will almost be like working four separate knit pieces at once. You will be working off of four balls of yarn!
Row 4: Tie on CC and k4 (CC) Then k26 (MC) k2 (CC) k26(MC) k4(CC)
Row 5: k4 (CC), k25(MC) k4(CC)

Essentially, you will start building the bottom triangle of the arrow little by little every row. This may involve sliding stitches of MC back and forth between needles in order to knit the CC pattern into it. Remember to twist the yarn where the colors meet.

The widest part of the arrow is 16 stitches across. The stripe (without decreases) is 8 stitches across.

Begin decreasing the hat at around 13 rows or when worked portion of hat measures 4”. I decreased 6 sections like so: k8, k2tog, k8, k2tog, every other row.

These decreases will make the arrow look a little uneven, but as it is the crown of the hat I don’t think most people will notice. If it really bothers you, you can duplicate stitch a consistent stripe on the crown of the hat.

Horn (x2)

Cast on 14 stitches using CC
Rows 1-5: Work in stockinette
Row 6: k5,k2tog,k2tog,k5
Row 7: p12
Row 8: k4, k2tog, k2tog, k4
and so on until you have only one stitch left.

Seam up the side of the horn and affix to hat. Stuff the horn with some polyfiber or old fabric if you want to give it some body.
