Do you live on the East Coast near Philly?

Racebending.com is coming to ECAASU2010 – The East Coast Asian American Student Union conference that will be held on the University of Pennsylvania campus on March 4th through March 6th!

ECAASU 2010 is the largest ethnic-interest collegiate conference in America – and Racebending.com will be hosting two workshops on Saturday, March 6th!

  • How and Why the Movie Industry Discriminates Against Asian Americans
This workshop will provide an overview of yellowface – the historical context, the reasons behind favoring white actors, and why the practice continues today as whitewashing (sans makeup).

It will also cover how media portrayals have a strong effect on shaping society’s views and on the development of children — taking up the vacuum created by superficially “colorblind” parenting.
  • How Social Media Can Combat Yellowface and Whitewashing

This workshop will focus on what The Last Airbender film represents and what it means if films like it continue to be profitable. Racebending.com panelists will show how social media, boycott, and grassroots protest are tools that the Asian American and wider community can bring to bear on these problems.

ECAASU 2010 is a collaboration of over 40 Asian American university student unions. Previous ECAASU conferences have had over 1,000 participants in attendance. Conferences have been held annually at different college campuses on the East Coast since 1978.

All-stars at this year’s ECASSU conference from the Asian American activist community include journalist, feminist, and LGBT rights activist Helen Zia, performers Ben Alisuag, Hari Kondabolu, Magnetic North, Taiyo Na. As an up-and-coming grassroots fan movement advocating for diversity in Hollywood, Racebending.com is honored to be able to host workshops about issues we care about at this famous Asian American conference!

For more information on the conference, please visit the Official ECAASU 2010 website.
To register online (deadline February 17th), visit the Registration Page. Members of the press & media and volunteers can register, too!

See you in Philly!

Can’t make it out to Philadelphia? Racebending.com will also be at WonderCon in San Francisco in early April!
